Mangrove Restoration

MANGROVE RESTORATION AND ECOSYSTEM CONSERVATION.

Status: Ongoing

Description

Dabaso Youth for Green Future’s Mangrove Restoration Project is a community-led conservation initiative focused on restoring and protecting mangrove ecosystems along the Kenyan coast. Through the project, we establish and manage mangrove nurseries where seedlings are raised before being planted in degraded areas or supplied to organizations, institutions and individuals committed to mangrove restoration.
We work closely with partners, community members and other stakeholders to organize mangrove planting activities, while also undertaking our own internal restoration activities as a youth group. This enables us to contribute directly to ecosystem restoration while creating opportunities for young people to gain practical experience in mangrove nursery management, restoration and environmental stewardship.
Our work recognizes mangroves as critical coastal ecosystems that support marine biodiversity, fisheries, shoreline protection, climate resilience and local livelihoods. By restoring degraded areas and encouraging wider community participation in mangrove conservation, we aim to strengthen the health and resilience of the coastal environment for present and future generations.
Our long-term vision is to build a sustainable, youth-led mangrove restoration model that combines nursery production, restoration partnerships, community action and environmental education to increase mangrove cover and strengthen local ownership of coastal ecosystem conservation.

Objectives

Mangrove Restoration:
1. Establish, maintain and progressively expand mangrove nurseries to produce at least 50,000 healthy mangrove seedlings for restoration and planting activities.
2. Plant and support the establishment of at least 40,000 mangrove seedlings in suitable degraded and restoration sites through our own planting activities and partnerships with organizations, institutions and individuals.
3. Engage at least 10 organizations, institutions, community groups or individuals in mangrove restoration through joint planting activities, conservation partnerships or other restoration initiatives.
4. Organize at least 10 community or youth-led mangrove conservation and restoration activities that promote awareness, practical participation and long-term stewardship of mangrove ecosystems by 2030.
