Description

Dabaso Youth for Green Future’s Crab Fattening Project is a community-led Blue Economy initiative that enables young people to generate sustainable livelihoods while supporting the conservation of coastal and mangrove ecosystems.
The project began in 2024 with support and mentorship from conservation partners and has grown into an enterprise that provides practical skills and income opportunities for youth through the fattening and sale of mangrove crabs. By linking mangrove conservation with sustainable aquaculture, the initiative demonstrates how healthy coastal ecosystems can create viable economic opportunities for local communities.
Beyond income generation, the project is building youth capacity in aquaculture management, entrepreneurship, financial management and environmental stewardship. The long-term vision is to expand the crab-fattening enterprise, create more youth employment opportunities and establish a sustainable community-owned model that contributes to both coastal conservation and economic resilience

Objectives

1. Create and strengthen sustainable livelihood opportunities for at least 100 coastal youth through crab fattening, value-chain activities and enterprise development by 2030.
2. Train at least 100 youth in sustainable crab aquaculture, business management, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.
3. Integrate mangrove conservation and sustainable livelihood activities into the crab project, engaging participating youth in practical conservation actions and promoting responsible use of coastal resources.
4. Expand the community-owned crab enterprise from its current operational capacity toward 600 crab-fattening cages by 2030, while establishing systems for production, marketing, financial management and reinvestment to support long-term sustainability.
